SwatchUpdated 6 months ago
A swatch is a small sample knitted to check gauge, tension, and fabric behavior before beginning a project. Swatching ensures that the final piece will match the pattern’s specified dimensions, preventing fit issues in garments or accessories.
How to Swatch Properly:
- Knit a Large Enough Swatch: Aim for at least 4x4 inches (10x10 cm), or the size indicated in the pattern, to accurately measure stitch and row gauge.
- Wash and Block the Swatch: Many yarns change texture after washing, so blocking the swatch as you would the finished item gives a truer gauge reading.
- Measure Carefully: Use a ruler or gauge tool to measure the number of stitches and rows per inch in the center of the swatch, avoiding edge stitches that may distort gauge.
Tip: Swatch in the same way you’ll knit the project (e.g., in the round or flat), as gauge can vary between techniques.
