Staple LengthUpdated 6 months ago

Staple length is the natural length of individual fibers before they are spun. It can range from under an inch (for short fibers like cotton) to several inches (for long fibers like alpaca). Staple length affects how easy the fiber is to spin; generally, longer staples are easier to handle and create smoother yarn, while shorter staples are more challenging but can result in soft, fluffy yarn.

Tip: For beginners, fibers with a longer staple length like Corriedale or Romney are easier to work with and less likely to break.
