BlockingUpdated 6 months ago
Blocking is a finishing step that uses moisture and heat to set the fabric’s shape, open up stitches, and even out tension. By wetting or steaming the project, you can shape it to the desired dimensions, enhancing the drape and stitch definition. Blocking is especially transformative for lace, textured, and colorwork pieces.
Types of Blocking:
- Wet Blocking: Soak the item in lukewarm water, gently squeeze out excess moisture, and lay it flat, pinning it to the desired shape. Ideal for natural fibers like wool, which responds well to water.
- Steam Blocking: Hold a steaming iron above the fabric (don’t press down) to relax the fibers. Good for fibers that can’t be soaked, like some synthetics.
- Spray Blocking: Lightly mist the fabric with water and pin it to shape. This method is useful for delicate fibers or projects needing minimal adjustment.
